What’s Trending in Window Fashions?

Elimination of exposed cords in a post-pandemic time meant big leaps for window treatment trends in 2023.

Interior Design trends have always been the driving force behind what is popular in window fashions. Although aesthetics still have an impact, in 2023 sociological and regulatory influences are playing a bigger role on window covering trends. So, what are the emerging trends in window fashions from those unique factors?

Embellishments

Soft treatments such as drapes, side panels and valances add layers to the window and give a room personality and warmth. Pre-pandemic trends saw mostly neutral and understated details, but in 2023 we are seeing more embellishments in the form of accent edge banding, colour blocking or decorative fringe on tie backs and top treatments. Homeowners are stepping away from playing it safe, and are having fun with adding more detail to soft treatments. You can even take it a step further by adding matching toss pillows with contrast welting or fringe to tie the room together.

Colour

One of the biggest interior design trends coming forward in 2023 has been colour – and lots of it. Vibrant raspberry, tropical orange, ultramarine blue and deep green tones have emerged as colours of the year and are making a splash on walls, furniture and décor. From a window treatment perspective we’re seeing it in the form of accents by way of decorative side panels, or those embellishments on draperies and valances. Pops of colour are showing up in big floral patterns and fresh abstracts, or more subtle geometrics for an understanded approach. Roman shades in fresh colours and patterns make a statement in any room whether they are open or closed.

Motorization

In 2022 Health Canada made significant changes to the Corded Window Covering Regulations and eliminated all exposed cords over 8” long. This has dramatically changed the way we use window treatments and has forced the industry to fast track innovation, which has lead to improving the accessibility of motorized shades. Motorized window treatments are more affordable and more user friendly than ever. Nearly every product can be motorized and can be operated from a remote, cell phone or even voice controlled and can be fully integrated with smart home technology. They can also be as simple as touching a wand on the shade to raise or lower it without the worry of looking for the remote.

Biophilic Materials

Biophilic Design is about increasing the connectivity of people to the natural environment in their indoor spaces. Being cooped up in our homes for two years meant we craved that connection more than ever. The use of natural materials and textures in window treatments is a popular trend this year. Natural shades are modern and sophisticated and feature materials such as woods and grasses to bamboo and jute. On trend colour palettes range from crisp, clean whites, to warm neutrals, and rich, deep darker tones. Sustainable products also help connect us to nature and there are plenty of recycled materials being used in window treatments, including fabrics created from reclaimed, washed-ashore plastics.

Matte Finishes

Draperies continue to be a big trend in window coverings and hardware plays an important role in not only the function, but also the aesthetic. Metal hardware in matte finishes, especially black and gold are remaining prominent in 2023. Brushed nickel and chrome have seen their day and are taking a step back in the decorative drapery hardware scene. Drapery hardware is often referred to as the jewelry of the room, and decorative hardware with more ornate finials is trending this year. Mixing matte finishes with acrylic touches adds a bit of understated glamour.

Double Duty

Recent weather trends have meant hotter summers and colder winters. Window treatments that can solve multiple challenges give you more bang for your buck. If you want to block the hot sun, maintain an ocean view and darken a room for sleeping, you’re going to need something versatile. The contrast in temperatures from winter to summer here on the coast means that a simple treatment isn’t going to cut it in many situations. Window treatments that offer two different opacities allow you to have more control over Mother Nature throughout the year. Roller shades, sheer shades and cellular or honeycomb shades can provide this functionality. As the sun moves throughout the day, and the temperature changes, having window treatments that can multi-task is ideal. Products that tilt to direct the sunlight allow you to block the summer heat, and harness the winter sun, as well as providing varying levels of privacy. Shutters and sheer shades, among other products, are popular for those multi-functional needs. Layering on windows, by combining shades and drapes, is another popular way to create a dual purpose treatment.
